The fundamental theory Data modelling

This module focuses on creating data models in Power BI. We’ll define what a star schema is and define dimensions, facts, keys, and relationships between tables.

Finance Track: Understand common data sources, how to combine multiple files, and different layouts for financial data.

Analytics Track: Connect to common CRM systems and pull in data.

Reporting Track: Learn the most common connection types and how to import a variety of sources.

Week 2 - Model and DAX

Create a Data Model

This module focuses on creating data models in Power BI. They will learn how to create a STAR schema and configure relationships between tables.

Writing DAX

This module introduces participants to Data Analysis Expressions (DAX), the formula language used in Power BI. Participants will learn how to write DAX formulas to perform calculations and business logic.

The fundamental theory of DAX

This module introduces key concepts of DAX. We look at how DAX runs under the covers, focusing on the concepts of evaluation contexts and iterators.

DAX Seminar

Finance Track: Understand the unique complexities of financial data, how to handle header and details, and how to model and write DAX for financial reports.

Analytics Track: Learn how to tailor reports for marketing purposes and analyze marketing-related data in Power BI.

Reporting Track: Learn best practices and data modeling for Power BI.

This module focuses on the art of storytelling with data using Power BI. Participants will learn how to effectively communicate insights and narratives by customizing experiences, using hierarchies, and using advanced features like custom formatting and AI visuals.

This module dives into advanced visualization techniques in Power BI Desktop. Participants will learn how to utilize advanced features like custom visuals, bookmarks, tooltips, drill-through, and build interactive and dynamic reports.

Visualization tips and tricks

Learn different tips and tricks to create professional and polished looking reports.

Creating Reports Seminar

Finance Track: Tips and tricks on how to create well-running, appealing financial reports in Power BI.

Analytics Track: Use statistics and analytics to visualize customer behavior.

Reporting Track: Learn how to create visually stunning reports quickly.

Week 4 - Deploy and Share

Deploying & Managing Model cycle

This module focuses on skills needed to efficiently maintain, update, and deploy Power BI models. It covers topics such as dataset configuration, workspace management, and deployment options. It also introduces learners to version control and DevOps practices.

Sharing Power BI Content

This module covers different sharing strategies for Power BI content. You will learn about sharing distributing content with Apps. You will also learn how to collaborate with workspaces and compare different sharing techniques.

Enforcing Permissions & Security

This module focuses on how to enforce permissions and security in your Power BI models. You will learn how to configure role-based access control (RBAC), implement RLS and OLS, and apply security labels. We’ll learn some common data leak pitfalls and how to avoid them.

Deploying Reports Seminar

Understand how to deploy, manage, and share content with your teams.

Weeks 5 & 6 - Capstone Project

Reporting Capstone

Take the skills you have learned over the previous weeks to put into action. You'll create and configure a report from scratch, being able to share it in your portfolio when complete. Available for the General, Finance, or Marketing tract.
